Should I Be Fit-Testing My Employees?
The simple answer is yes. Where any respiratory protective equipment is used, it must be able to provide protection for its wearer. Incorrectly fitted or sized masks can result in the mask leaking and causing harm to the wearer, rendering the Face Mask ineffective. Fit Testing is a painless progress, there are two types of tests conducted, the Qualitative Test and the Quantitative Test. The Qualitative is suitable for any disposable or half masks that do not include breathing apparatus, the Quantitative is for masks that are usually a full face and that do include breathing apparatus. The Fit Test itself has to be carried out by a competent person.
It is recommended that Fit Testing is done before you first use a mask. Once you pass the Fit Test, you will not have to be re-tested unless your face shape changes, you buy a new mask, or your originally mask becomes damaged in any way. Face Shape changes include growing a beard or putting on or losing weight.
Face Fit Testing simply ensures that the masks you or your employees work do their job, therefore it is definitely worth considering getting fit tested and keeping yourself safe.
