Forklift training should always include 3 stages, these are:
Basic Forklift Training – This should include the basic skills and knowledge required to operate a forklift truck
Specific Job Training -Knowledge and understanding of the principles of operating a forklift truck safely in the workplace
Familirisation Training – Applying what has already been learnt at work, on the job
Operators with some experience on a forklift may require less training than a novice, however, you should not overestimate the value of experience. It would not be suitable to operate a forklift different to the one that you have been trained on. The forklift training course itself should no ever exceed a ration of 1:3 for tutor to student, this is to ensure that the quality of content is communicated effectively between the students and the tutor. The duration on the course is also dependent on the previous experience of the candidate. For instance, an existing operator would take 2 days to complete their forklift training course, whereas a Novice would take 3 Days. Competence is often tested by means of assessment towards the end of the course, this can include theoretical and practical examinations to ensure the driver is safe.

Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 employers are required to ‘ensure that all persons who use work equipment have received adequate training for purposes of health and safety, including training in the methods which may be adopted when using the work equipment, any risks which such use may entail and precautions to be taken’. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 also place duties on employers to provide training. By not providing you with any training at all, your employer could be breaking the law. Rider-operated lift trucks includes the requirements for basic lift-truck training. – HSE
